The York University Research Programme in Strategic Studies conducts research in contemporary international security and arms control. This volume is part of the Programmes activities in Military Strategic Studies. The Conference participants focused their discussion on the full range of issues which have affected deterrence.
Deterrence as theory, as strategy, and as policy came under close scrutiny. There was no consensus amongst scholars nor amongst policy-makers on how to resolve the deep-rooted dilemmas that are discussed in this volume- however with a continued exchange of views both within the West - and hopefully with the Soviet Union and the East - it may be possible to make strides towards some degree of consensus on how to manage East-West and intra-Alliance relations in a manner which will enhance mutual and international security.
